Musical note to UL’s Masters in Classical String Performance programme

The University of Limerick Masters in Classical String Performance is a two-year full time programme. The programme is done in collaboration with the Irish Chamber Orchestra as well as the Irish World Academy.

The course gives students the opportunity to train, study and perform with world-renowned musicians, composers and conductors. Leaders from the Irish Chamber Orchestra will deliver classes.

The course also includes:

  • Membership of Academos, the Irish Chamber Orchestra ensemble that combines ICO members as well as MA students
  • Specialised tuition in a wide range of performance practice techniques
  • Weekly session with accompanist, as well as an intensive coaching week


In addition, students have a choice of electives and independent studies. These draw upon the resources of the Irish World Academy. Options include Trad, Multimedia, Improvisation, Music Therapy, Community Music as well as many more.

Entry Requirements

  • Primary degree in a suitable discipline with first or second class honours or an approved equivalent qualification. An equivalent capability based on prior professional experience may be acceptable
  • A performance audition. This may be conducted either in person or through audio or video recording
  • An interview
  • The course director may request additional materials

What to include with your application

  • Qualification transcripts and certificates
  • English language qualification if English is not your first language
  • Certified English translations of your transcripts/certificates where the originals are in a language other than English.
  • A copy of your birth certificate (long document)
  • Two signed letters of personal recommendation
