New data from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) confirms what many in the sector have observed: postgraduate study in Ireland is booming. The 2024/25 academic year has seen a record 66,535 students enrolled in postgraduate programmes, a striking 7.6% increase from the previous year.

This growth significantly outpaces the undergraduate sector and solidifies the central role of postgraduates in the Irish higher education landscape. Postgraduates now make up 23.9% of all students, a notable rise from just 17.8% in 2007/08, highlighting a long-term trend towards advanced qualifications.

Taught Masters Programmes Lead the Surge

The drive in postgraduate numbers is being led by taught masters programmes. Enrolments in taught masters degrees jumped by 9.8% in a single year, from 31,170 in 2023/24 to 34,235 in 2024/25. This programme type remains the most popular postgraduate pathway by a significant margin.

The data also shows a healthy 12.7% year-on-year increase in postgraduate certificate programmes, indicating strong demand for shorter, specialist qualifications.

A Welcoming Environment for International Postgrads

Ireland's reputation as a hub for world-class postgraduate education is underscored by the enrolment figures for international students. Among non-Irish domiciled students, the split between undergraduate and postgraduate study is almost even, with 48.7% choosing postgraduate pathways.

This suggests that Ireland's postgraduate offerings are a major draw on the global stage, providing a diverse and international environment for all students.

The Class of 2024: A Landmark Year for Postgraduate Graduates

The graduation figures for the Class of 2024 further cement this trend. The year saw the highest number of postgraduate graduates on record, with 33,485 students completing their awards. Postgraduates now constitute 37.6% of all graduates, up from 26.8% in the Class of 2008.

Within this group, the taught masters degree was the standout credential. A record 20,265 students graduated with a taught masters, and it now accounts for 60.5% of all postgraduate awards, a share that has steadily grown over the past 15 years.

What Does This Mean for Prospective Postgrads?

This data paints a clear picture:

  • Growing Popularity: Postgraduate study is increasingly becoming a mainstream choice for career advancement and specialization.

  • Diverse Options: The strong growth in both masters and certificate programmes means more flexible learning routes are available.

  • Global Cohort: Students can expect to join a vibrant, internationally diverse community of peers.

  • Proven Outcomes: With a record number of graduates, the value of an Irish postgraduate qualification is being recognized by more employers and industries than ever before.
