On 12 June 2025, academic leaders and staff from across Ireland gathered at Maynooth University for the annual IUA Deans of Graduate Studies Symposium - a full-day event focused on advancing postgraduate education through professional development, shared learning, and collaboration.
The symposium featured a dynamic programme of presentations, discussions, and workshops, with topics ranging from academic supervision and doctoral training pathways to fostering inclusive research environments.
One of the highlights of the day was the official launch of the National Guidelines for Viva Voce Examinations: Guidance for Examiners and Supports for Doctoral Candidates. These guidelines mark a significant step toward standardising and supporting viva practices nationwide, offering clarity for examiners while ensuring doctoral candidates are better prepared and supported throughout the final stages of their research journey.
Organised by the Irish Universities Association (IUA) in partnership with graduate schools across the country, the event was a valuable forum for exchanging ideas, sharing best practice, and strengthening networks.
