Classical String Performance



The MA offers advanced string and keyboard tuition in violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano and harpsichord. The programme emphasizes solo playing, chamber music, and accompanying, while encouraging interdisciplinary and collaborative projects with instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers from other degree programmes. While maintaining the continuation of the well-known Classical Music traditions, the MA programme also aims to cater for the emerging needs of musicians entering into the global cultural life of the 21st century.

Overview
This MA Classical String Performance is unique due to its partnership with the Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO).

All students receive a weekly instrumental lesson with the relevant ICO principal plus technique lessons and chamber coaching with ICO members.

The course also includes:
Membership of Academos, the Irish Chamber Orchestra ensemble that combines ICO members and MA students
Specialised tuition in a wide range of performance practice techniques including audition techniques, Alexander, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, self-marketing, programme notes, performance anxiety, practice, professionalism, analysis. mindfulness, pedagogy, pilates, yoga.
Weekly session with accompanist, plus Intensive coaching week with guest pianist per year on duo sonata repertoire.
A choice of electives and independent studies that draw upon the resources of the Irish World Academy – including Trad, Multimedia, Improvisation, Music Therapy, Community Music and many more.

Our graduates are employed as professional musicians, soloists, chamber musicians or as members of professional orchestras and ensembles including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, RTE Concert Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Con Tempo Quartet, Stradivari Quartet, Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra, Concerto Malaga, Gyor Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and Prague Chamber Orchestra. Many graduates are in teaching positions up to third level in their respective countries while others are pursuing further studies or completing their doctorates.
