GRASP 2026 - Graduate Research and Applications Seminar in Psychology

11th May 2026
Est. Reading: 2 minutes
The Department of Psychology in Maynooth University held a Graduate Research and Applications Seminar in Psychology (GRASP) on Wednesday 29th April. GRASP provides an opportunity for research postgraduate students in the department to present their research among their peers and supervisors. It is also an opportunity to share research results, publications, learn, share ideas, discuss research and challenges and to meet their peers. The seminar is organised by research postgraduate students in the department.

This year a total of seven PhD researchers and one post-doctoral researcher visiting from Belgium presented some of their work. It included one student, Rachel Brown, who had recently successfully defended her VIVA Voce. Each student had a twenty-minute time slot to present, which included a five-minute question and answer slot at the end.

The presentations represented researchers at different levels in their academic journey and across the three research pillars of psychology in the department: Pillar 1, Brain, behaviour and cognition; Pillar 2: Mental & physical health, wellbeing and inclusion; and Pillar 3: Organisations, systems, technology and society.

There was time for some social interaction with some light refreshments at the end. The seminar was deemed a success with many positive comments from both participants and audience members alike. A longer session may be required in future as the session ran over time due to many interesting questions from the audience.

The full line up of presentations included;

  1. Niamh Petrie (Supervisors Dr Joanna McHugh Power and Dr Sadhbh Byrne) “Designing Age Friendly Housing: Space, Access and Social Connection.”
  2. Jennifer Deane-King (supervisor Dr Rebecca Maguire) “Smoking to Vaping - “I wanted to fit in with the cool kids and it’s cheaper than cigarettes.”
  3. Dr Yvonne Visser (KULeuven University, Belgium) collaborating with Dr Peter Murphy “Achieving Metacognitive Insight into Latent Decision-Making Parameters.”
  4. Tessa Kingston (supervisors Dr Joanne McVeigh, Prof Mac MacLachlan and Dr Tadhg MacIntyre) “The Use of Sailing as a Therapeutic Intervention.”
  5. Marcus Broughill (supervisors Prof. Philip Hyland and Prof. Sean Commins) “Traumatic Memories Are Directly Associated with Depression and Anxiety, Independent of Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms.”
  6. Carina Kaufmann (supervisors Prof. Bryan Roche and Dr. Jamie Cummins) “Relational Frame Theory and the Reconceptualisation of Intelligence.”
