Postgraduate Study in France
Fees & Costs
Third level education is subsidised heavily by the French government. Fees are typically €200 to €300 a year for postgraduate students, but can be higher for some engineering and business studies programmes. Tuition costs are, therefore, very reasonable, and definitely serve as an incentive for students to remain in further study.
There are no subsidies for cost of living expenses such as accommodation, food, transport and other bills. It can be difficult to find affordable student housing - especially in Paris. EduFrance estimates that international students will need about 1,000 Euros a month to live comfortably in France, with Paris being more expensive.
There are a number of scholarship programmes that are funded by the French government for international postgraduate students. Academic excellence scholarships include the Programme Eiffel and Programme Major. Information on these and other schemes is available from the French Embassy. Financial support through the EU Erasmus scheme may be available. There are also a number of other private and Irish government scholarships and funding schemes available. Contact your present university or the Irish Higher Education Authority for more information. The Internet is a very useful resource for learning more about scholarship opportunities.
Irish students do not need a work permit to work in France, and many students supplement their income through part-time work. Bear in mind, however, that unemployment levels are currently high. Student loans and generous parents are two other common methods of funding postgraduate study in France.
