Researchers make their impact

DCU's the Helix is the venue for 'Making an Impact', an event highlighting six of the most exciting and intriguing research projects being carried out by students in Ireland. The event will take place on Tuesday, the 26th of May, at 7.45pm. 

'Making an Impact' was the creation of The Higher Education Authority and the Irish Independent, inviting research students in any discipline to make a short submission on the difference that their research work will make to a particular aspect of Irish life, to the country as a whole or indeed, internationally.

The six researchers below, who in the opinion of an independent adjudication panel  put forward the most innovative or challenging ideas have been invited to present how their research is making an impact. They will have a maximum of ten minutes to make the presentation, followed by a brief question and answer session with an expert panel.

• Beatrice Smyth - Great Gas: Slurry, grass and the greening of Ireland
• Aisling Ni Annaidh - The Mechanics of Stabbing
• Orlaith Burke - As Safe as Houses? Using Statistics to Safeguard your Health
• Michael Daly - From National Time Accounts to National Time Banking
• Cuisle O'Donovan - Wii Fit or Wii Fat?
• Bernard Kelly - Prisoners of History: ex- servicemen in Ireland, 1945 - 1951
  

Two awards of €2,500 sponsored by the Irish Independent will be made at the end of the evening, one by the expert panel and the other by a vote of second level students who will form part of the audience.

Kevin Myers of the Irish Independent will host the event and will be joined by the panel that includes:

• John Walshe, Education Editor, Irish Independent
• Larry Bass, Managing Director, Screentime Shinawil (the company responsible for You’re A Star and the Irish versions of The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den)
• Frances Ruane, Director, Economic and Social Research Institute and member of the HEA
