School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences (SSHES)
The School is amongst the very best academic departments in sport and exercise science related studies in the UK.   It is a multidisciplinary department renowned for the quality of its teaching and research.  We have some of the world’s leading researchers who have national and international reputations.  Further many staff are either accredited by, or members of, the British Association for Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).  The School itself is rated in the top 10 in the UK with 80% of our research judged as world leading or at an international level (2008 Research Assessment Exercise).

Our excellence in research feeds directly into our postgraduate degree programmes. Whether registered for a MSc, MRes, or a higher degree by research (MPhil or PhD), we aim to develop your potential as an independent researcher who can operate from a theory-driven perspective and can address both theoretical and applied questions using a wide variety of research methods.

The research focus of the School equips graduates with the latest knowledge in their selected field, a wide range of transferable skills, and an autonomous approach to learning that keeps them at the cutting edge of their chosen career.

  MSc Programmes
The MSc programmes have been designed to be flexible and relevant to the individual needs and interests of students, with a strong emphasis on the application of theory to professional practice. Within a modular structure students undertake compulsory modules in Research Methods and choose from optional according to the programme chosen.   An Independent Study, and a Dissertation relevant to the programme are also undertaken, and a Supervised Experience module provides an excellent grounding for commencing BASES supervisory experience, which all postgraduate students are supported in undertaking.

MSc Programmes

·    Applied Sports Science
·    Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology
·    Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
·    Sport and Exercise Psychology * BPS accredited
·    Exercise Rehabilitation
·    Applied Sport Science and Outdoor Activities

Our MRes programmes are aimed at students who may be interested in pursuing a PhD/research career.  They have been designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the principles and application of research design and analytical methods relevant to their scientific discipline.  Students will also learn about the importance of conducting research with reference to ethical and regulatory guidelines and develop their theoretical understanding of research at the forefront of their chosen discipline. These new programmes facilitate the integration of theory and professional practice, and throughout the programmes the research process and emphasis on student autonomy of learning become increasingly important.

Within a modular structure students undertake compulsory modules in Research Skills and Qualitative Research Methods and choose from optional modules in Clinical Exercise Physiology, Sport Psychology, Exercise Psychology, Effective Coaching, Performance Physiology, Disability and Rehabilitation or Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete, according to the programme chosen, up to a total of 60 credits.  The final compulsory Research Project comprises 120 credits.

There are three pathways:
·    Sport and Exercise Physiology (MRes)
·    Sport and Exercise Psychology (MRes)
·    Sport and Exercise Sciences (MRes)
MPhil and PhD Programmes
For those wishing to pursue an entirely research-based degree, MPhil and PhD programmes are available.

Applicants to the MPhil programme will already possess a BSc in a relevant discipline. Study can be over one year full-time, although two years is more normal, or over three years part-time.

Students who already possess an MSc in a relevant discipline may wish to study for a doctorate (PhD). The period of registration is normally three years full-time or five years part-time.

The School is situated on the edge of the Menai Strait, North Wales, and the surrounding area is one of the prime university locations in Britain for pursuing sport and outdoor activities.  Our teaching and research facilities include an environmental chamber, two dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scanners, physiology and psychology labs, a suite of psychomotor experimental rooms and a state of the art motion analysis lab.

The School offers bursaries (up to £2,500 for home/EU and up to £3,500 for non-EU applicants) for students following any of our MSc or MRes Programmes, plus some PhD studentships.
