St Patrick’s College, Maynooth opened its doors as an educational institution in 1795 and, over the intervening two centuries, it has established for itself an impressive reputation for scholarship and learning. The Theology Faculty’s postgraduate section offers postgraduate qualifications from Higher Diploma to Doctoral level.

 

  Postgraduate Courses
Postgraduate programmes offered at Maynooth include:
  • Doctoral Degree in Theology (PhD)

    The Doctoral Degree of PhD in Theology is awarded to those holding the MTh (Master’s Degree in Theology) who satisfactorily complete the PhD course and research requirements for the Doctoral Degree.

  • Master's Degree in Theology (Mode A / Mode B) (MTh)

    The programme for degree of Master in Theology (Mode A / Mode B) (MTh)  offers candidates the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Theology through specialised study, personal work and research.

  • Master's Degree in Theology (Pastoral Theology) - (MTh)

    Master's Degree in Theology (Pastoral Theology) prepares people for ministry through participative learning, faith formation, theological reflection and practical pastoral ministry.  At the heart of the Pastoral Theology programme is the engagement between Theology and ministry.

  • Master's Degree in Liturgical Music - (MLM)

    Master's Degree in Liturgical Music is a joint academic and practice-based programme which will qualify holders to undertake posts as organists, cantors, or directors of music at parish or diocesan level.  Each year of the programme will consist of theological and theoretical study of the Church’s liturgy, with specific attention to the area of liturgical music.  This academic component will be balanced by an intensive course of supervised practical training in a number of core liturgical music disciplines.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Communication and Development

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Christian Communication and Development is awarded on the successful completion of one year’s full-time study.  Students are trained by media professionals in the management and technical aspects of media production so that they will carry from the course immediately usable technical skills.

  • Higher Diploma in Pastoral Liturgy

    This one-year course, conducted by the National Centre for Liturgy, offers candidates the opportunity to study the worship of the Church, its tradition and its place in the Church today.  It aims to provide training in liturgy to enable the student to take a leadership role in pastoral work, specialising in liturgy, at diocesan and parish level.

  • Higher Diploma in Theological Studies 

    The Higher Diploma in Theological Studies is a one-year part-time evening course that caters for graduates of disciplines other than Theology.  It is recognised by the Department of Education and Science as entitling teachers holding Department-recognised degrees and teacher-training qualifications to teach up to 15 hours’ Religious Education per week in a voluntary secondary school.

    Holders of postgraduate degrees in Theology from Maynooth are to be found at all levels of the teaching profession, including universities abroad, in the media and in the public service.  Further details of postgraduate courses can be obtained by contacting the Admissions Officer.
