M.A in Social Work-graduating now-what to do?

Postby reindeer » Thu Apr 23, 2009 6:42 pm

Hi there,
am just graduating in a few wks with a Masters in Social Work. have also a hons BA in social care.
dont know what to do as there is current embargo in hse till 2010. Have applied to every social work dept in the rep of Ire and also all hospitals and voluntary and private agencies. I have also applied for numberous social care jobs but so far nothing. there is also ban on recruitment in probotion service until the end of 2011. I have so many rejection letters. As a social worker I should be starting off on a salary of 42,000 but would down to 31,000 as a social care worker. even though I would happily take a job as a scw.
I have spent six years in college now and seems like a waste. the hse r even letting temp social workers go so the chance of getting a positon.
Apart from emmigarting, what can I do?
thanks

It was announced today by the Children's Minister that 270 Social Workers would be appointed to help with carrying out the implementation of the recommendations of the Ryan Report.

You know I hate to say it but you might as well check out that immigration option because if you read the financial news you will know that Ireland is in big trouble. Why beat your head against a wall? Perhaps your skills could be better put to use in another country, like the USA? I don't know what your actual chances are of emigrating to the US is but if you wait for things to turn around there and get the job you want you could be waiting for years and years. Also, the longer you go without getting employed in your field of study the harder it will likely be for you to get work in that area. Time delays aren't good (I know from experience). You don't want to graduate during a downturn but of course you don't have control over that. Best of luck to you! If you do come to the USA you can get some of your course upgrading online at http://ce4less.com which will save you school costs at least.

I think that you can try for some smaller jobs, later after getting experience, you can possible check out for higher jobs which offer you high salary.

you can learn many things in a smaller firms and then can try for long jobs.
