The thought of working in Farming might inspire images of driving tractors and milking cows but this is a stereotype that only encompasses a very small amount of those working in the sector today. The employment prospects are as diverse as they are many; the only common attribute is that the main aim is to develop, maintain and protect the land.
Current Climate
With new technology continually being introduced it is imperative that farmers keep up to date in order to make their jobs and lives as straightforward as possible. With frightening numbers of cost effective supermarkets appearing in intimidating gangs at every corner smaller farms are feeling the pressure of competing with those producing in bulk and many are now responding by using the selling point of quality over quantity and therefore carving a separate niche in the crowded industry of produce.
Know Your Place
Agricultural/garden service engineers service and repair a variety of farm/garden vehicles and machines.
Farm managers are responsible for making daily decisions required for the smooth and efficient running of a farm; eg budgeting, keeping records and making decisions about sales and purchases
Agricultural research scientists conduct research to develop new or improved methods of planting, harvesting and cultivating crops.
Farm workers carry out the general duties involved in running a farm. Work may be on an arable farm dealing with crops, a livestock farm specialising in the rearing of animals, or a farm that mixes both areas.
Agricultural Advisor involves the formulation, implementation and monitoring of an agricultural/rural development plan for a specific rural base area.
Agricultural engineers use engineering science to design and develop agricultural machinery and equipment for agriculture, horticulture, and ground care for forestry.
Show Me The Money
The income of those working in farming is entirely dependent on their experience and skill level. Farm workers can expect a start off wage of €19,000 while Senior Farm Engineers can often command a salary of up to €150,000. Most incomes are at a level of €25,000 to €40,000
Top Tip
Organic farming is quickly become a popular method in Ireland due to the high demand for its produce. Specialising in this area would prove to be a rewarding option.
