While students in this area may take general courses in Agricultural Science at undergraduate level, when choosing a postgraduate course it can pay to specialise. Postgraduate programmes cover almost every conceivable subject relating to life in rural Ireland: agricultural production, rural development, the agri-food industry, food marketing and safety, animal welfare, quality control and more.

A growth area in the sector arises from a growing awareness of the problems associated with the development of our natural resources. There is a demand for graduates who can both scientifically assess problems and come up with practical solutions and there are an increasing number of postgraduate programmes that concentrate on this area. Students can choose from subjects as diverse as ecosystem conservation, natural heritage protection and management, waste management/resource use, urban development, transport management and climatology.
