To become fully recognised by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), you must have a minimum of two years’ approved practical experience. You must also take an examination in professional practice. The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists is the professional body for architectural technologists.
It is also possible, and fairly common, for qualified architectural technologists to become fully qualified architects, studying Architecture at Irish universities or in the UK.
The majority of newly qualified architects and architectural technologists work for a private practice or in the architectural department of a local authority, government department, semi-state or commercial organisation. After gaining experience, many architects choose to practice independently.
Newly qualified architects can generally expect to command a salary of €25,000 – €30,000; after five to seven years’ experience, this can rise to €40,000 – €50,000. If you are promoted to associate level in a firm, you can expect a salary of €50,000 – €65,000, while partners can earn as much as €70,000 – €90,000.
Job roles in this area include the following:
Architect
Architectural Technologist
Draughtsman
Structural Engineer
Building Technologist
